Error fares — also known as mistake fares or fat-finger fares — occur when airlines or online travel agencies accidentally publish tickets at drastically reduced prices. These pricing mistakes can save travellers hundreds or even thousands of euros on flights. The most common signs of a pricing glitch include:

• Price 40-90% below the average for that route and time period
• Business or first class priced like economy — a classic fare error indicator
• Wrong currency conversion — e.g., pricing in local currency as if it were euros or dollars
• Missing fuel surcharges or taxes that are normally included in the total price
• Unusually cheap long-haul routes — transatlantic flights for under 200 euros are almost always errors

The key to catching a mistake fare is speed. Most pricing mistakes are corrected within 2 to 12 hours once the airline notices.

Some of the most legendary error fares include British Airways selling first-class tickets from the US to India for just $40 in 2009 due to a fuel surcharge omission. • Budget airlines (Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizz Air): Generally honour pricing mistakes once a confirmation email is sent. Their automated booking systems rarely flag price errors.
• European legacy carriers (BA, Lufthansa, Air France): May attempt to cancel, but EU consumer law often protects confirmed bookings.
• US carriers (United, Delta, American): The US DOT previously required airlines to honour ticketed fares, but this rule was relaxed. Some carriers still honour them as goodwill.
• Asian carriers (Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines): Often honour error fares to maintain brand reputation.

The best strategy: book the accidental fare immediately, avoid calling the airline to ask about it, and wait for the ticket number. Once ticketed, your chances of flying at that price increase dramatically.

If an airline cancels your error fare booking, you have several options depending on your location and the booking circumstances:

• Check your consumer rights: EU passengers are protected under distance selling regulations. A confirmed booking is generally a binding contract.
• Contact your payment provider: If charged and cancelled without consent, you may have chargeback rights.
• File a complaint: National aviation authorities (UK CAA, AESA in Spain, etc.) can mediate disputes between passengers and airlines.
• Use social media: Airlines often resolve complaints faster when raised publicly on Twitter/X.

To protect yourself, always book mistake fares with flexible or refundable hotel reservations, and avoid purchasing non-refundable add-ons until your flight ticket number is confirmed.
